Loved this place...we came into Shelter Cove across from Palmetto Dunes and walked all the way around the marina lusting for the boats and ending up here. Sat by the window and looked at even more boats coming and going. Nice selection of wine...life is good. Hubby was thrilled with his steak...I had lobster bisque and salad. It was all fabulous. It is a little pricey, but isn't every place in HH?? I highly recommend if you're in the area.

Food, service and the entire staff were all good. My impression is if u r looking for a rock solid/dependable meal this is a very good choice. FYI we really enjoyed the live music....it was a Friday night so not sure if that is every night.

Hot hot hot. But not in the best way. Visited for Mother's Day brunch. Made reservation request for outdoor table to enjoy the morning but unfortunately our table was dead on in the sun and with no umbrella (only table in the sun, our dumb luck). Ok grin and bear it as I could use a little color. Bad news was had prox half hour delay between salad & drink before entree arrived. By then we were baked. Not a cube of ice survived in the Bloody Mary glass. Requested to be moved inside and so glad we did. All would have been fine without the long delay in the entree delivery. Nothing fancy here just an eggs Benedict and another typical brunch item. Eggs were good, Bloody Mary ok, key lime pie was the highlight. Would have ranked slightly higher but the place just felt a little bit out of control, overwhelmed. Nice venue, good possibilities.

Good lunch & nice view. Enjoyed blackened grouper sandwich & truffle fries. Disappointed in Raspberry Cosmo.

Our best and last dinner on the island. We made reservations using Open Table and we were seated immediately upon arrival. Without a reservation they were quoting 45 minutes for a patio table. With a 7pm reservation and a patio table we enjoyed the sunset with a glass of wine. They did not rush us to order. Based on other yelp recommendations we ordered the grouper and crab cake dinner. Both were expertly prepared, fresh and very tasty. We had a great around experience and didn't want it to end so we stayed for dessert. We will definitely be back.

Beautiful restaurant with great sunset views from our table. Everything was just right...food, service, ambiance. Perfect place for a romantic evening out.

Best food Best view Best service On Hilton Head You may spend more but you get quality ... Well worth it. I had flounder and it was fantastic. Bone in rib eye also very good. All four of us had great meals. If you have a special event or just want a nice evening out don't miss Ela's.

I had the butcher block bone in ribeye It was awesome. Cooked perfectly. Our waitress "Lily: was the best. Right there whenever we needed anything. I recommend this to all the Hilton Head locals.

Amazing meal. I had the ribeye and my wife had the scallops. The ribeye was extremely tender and cooked to perfection. My wife's scallops were seared exactly to her liking. We had the calamari as an appetizer. They were strips rather than rings. The calamari was fantastic and the sauces that came with it were excellent. The bread was fresh and warm. The view and ambience is impeccable. Overall, this was a great dining experience. We'll be back.

While this restaurant had beautiful ambience, a great view and delicious hushpuppies, I was not blown away by the food. My shrimp and grits with prosciutto was overly salty. I will say I enjoyed the key lime Pie dessert very much. I would come back here for a drink definitely but not sure if I'd give it another whirl for dinner....definitely not terrible , was an enjoyable experience but can't get over that salty dish!

Excellent service-ordered oysters, carpaccio and lobster nachos for apps-all were amazing!!! Enjoyed the pan seared scallops with white truffle risotto for my entree. Fantastic!

Visited Ela's end of August 2015 and had a great experience. Food was delicious and staff was attentive without being overbearing. Beet salad and Arugula salads were very tasty. We both had the butchers cut filet mignon which was excellent and perfectly cooked. Ordered the crab risotto and steamed spinach to share as sides. The crab risotto was amazing (lick the plate kind of amazing) and the steamed spinach was OK. Overall very good. It's pricey but worth it, and if you get a view of the harbor it adds to the experience.

Wonderful dining experience. Would go back in a heartbeat. We sat out on the deck overlooking the water while sharing a bottle of wine. I had the special: Monk fish wrapped in prosciutto along with Israeli couscous. My husband had the New York Strip with green beans, carrots, and potato sticks. Everything was perfect. We also loved the bread and hush puppies that served in the beginning.

Marginal Mother's Day Brunch Gorgeous view is about the only positive I can take away from this restaurant. The service was slow...long periods of time between our waitress visits and our meals took forever. Our table ordered three Crab Eggs Benedict and all of the eggs were served hard. We had to ask for two additional poached eggs to be brought to the table. For a $24 entree is was very marginal. The stuffed French toast was fair. I must report however, that my baby shrimp, three egg omelet was good and prepared as I requested...well done. In addition, the piano playing in the background was too loud for easy conversation. Pricey for marginal food and service, but again...lovely view.

Incredible ambience both indoors & the roof top patio! Food was wonderful, but the special (black bass) was a little boring. Crab cakes were really good and the wine (Blue Eyed Boy - Molly Dooker was excellent at a fantastic price. Highly recommend this place.

I was excited to try this place based on reviews but was unfortunately let down. While the restaurant itself it nice, the view pretty and the servers friendly, the actual food was very disappointing. The shrimp cocktail appetizer was good but all of our main dishes were overcooked and ill seasoned. Scallops were rubbery, same with the lobster dish, and both steaks were cooked "well done" when they should have been "medium". It should have been obvious to the server when he came to check on how the steaks were, but he did not acknowledge it. For the price paid, the quality of the meal was definitely not acceptable. I wouldn't go back or recommend it.

Wonderful Sunday brunch menu. I got the water blue breakfast special, it was well priced for the amount of food that came with it; the other person in my party gad the jumbo lump crab omelette, which he said was delicious. The waiter was very friendly and our food came out quickly. We were given a boost with a great view of the water and the surrounding land, overall it was a great experience for brunch.

I ordered the blackened tuna it was phenomenal. My mom ordered the crab cakes and said they were excellent though she maintains not as good as the ones she makes. The service was excellent. View was gorgeous!

Seared yellow find tuna. SO GOOD! Wife got pork. Very tasty. Kids mac and cheese? Yes! Kids chicken and pasta? So good. Ambiance was nice. They have heaters outside for cool nights. The view when seated out there is perfect. This place is a definite dinner choice. A must do.

I don't know what they did but the service and food for an unexpected visit this year was much better. My sister had picked the place without me knowing it was our destination. I was anticipating a repeat of disaster meal 2012. I was pleasantly surprised to find that service had improved. The menu seemed better but I couldn't tell you what had changed. The hushpuppies were MUCH better. Two diners got the ugly burger and enjoyed it. I got a flatbread that was quite good. Two diners got the scallops. All were enjoyed. Only downer was the lobster bisque that my mom got that she didn't like. Said the flavor wasn't what she thought it would be and didn't enjoy it. I still don't know if we'll ever go back by choice as it still bothers me that my preference for well-done meat is cautioned to "eat at your own risk". I find that annoying.

Terrible service! We made reservations a day ahead, got there and sitted us by the bar with loud music and would not sit us outside despite available tables b/c it was reserved-like our reservation didn't mean anything! We walked out and ended at a great Mediterranean restaurant at Shelter Cove that was excellent in service and food!

We have been coming to HHI since 1981 and have been to literally every restaurant. First time at Ela's and not sure it is worth the trip. View and atmosphere is outstanding. Everything else is just ok. We had a nice Chardonnay (albeit over priced). My grouper was good, crab cake was average and served cold, and the flounder was again... Just ok. We actually sent the risotto back. This has promise on entry and but frankly underwhelms. So many options on he island... This one could be a pass.

Loved it! There were 7 in our group and everyone enjoyed their meals which was refreshing! The scallops were outstanding probably the best I have ever had. I did try the NY strip with bernaise sauce and it melted in my mouth. Beautiful and clean and they do offer outdoor seating that over looks the marina. I highly recommend this hidden gem but be prepared for a fairly high bill at the end. The two bottles of wine didn't help that but totally worth it!

Great location on an inlet. Outdoor and indoor seating on the second floor overlooking a marina and waterway. Good food and mimosas. Large selection of wine.

Went here with a group of 9. Lots of staff walking around but still no energy in the service. Lobster was ok at best. Although claimed fresh seemed frozen. Minimum 45 minute wait to get your food. View is great but definitely could have used some shades. My family owns our business and just does not understand the laise faire attitudes. Spend your money elsewhere. She told us an 18% gratuity was added on and she knew that from the start.

Dined here for our Easter dinner. Phenomenal views of marina and fresh local caught fish. The flounder with lobster butter over truffle mashed potatoes and seasonal veggies was divine. If you want a classy restaurant with savory entrees and gorgeous views, dine here!

Really enjoyed this restaurant. We ordered the tuna tartare, lobster with risotto, scallops and crab cake. All the food was exceptional! We took the waiter's recommendation to pair it with a nice CA white wine which was spot on. Waiter was super attentive, ambiance was awesome with tiny lights and real candles glowing and oil paintings of local artist.

My fiance and I were looking for a nice little romantic restaurant overlooking the water on our vacation in SC so we made reservations for ELA. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating in a nice intimate setting. The wine list has a nice list of selections. My fiance is gluten free so I had the bread basket all to myself :-) which was amazing. The basket consisted of a nice french bread and hush puppies accompanied by a sweet butter which was delicious. For dinner I had the 8 oz filet with truffle mash and veggies and my fiance had the 12 oz strip. The steaks were both cooked perfectly and the sauces that accompanied them were wonderful. Our waiter brought out a beautiful tray of desserts and I ended up going with the cheesecake and was not disappointed. The food, ambience, and service at this restaurant were outstanding. We will definitely be returning next time we vacation to Hilton Head :-)

Great atmosphere. Great views. Great service. Calamari is excellent, long succulent strips, lightly breaded by hand, melt in your mouth. Grouper is one of the best I have had.

Order the Lobster Bisque!!!! It is fantastic. The Fish & Chips closely resembled chicken fingers, and the Lobster sliders were fresh, but I needed to add a touch of salt.

We generally eat at Red Fish when we visit HHI but wanted to try something different. My husband found Ela's through Trip Advisor where evidently the reviews are consistently good. We arrived relatively early (6:00) as no later reservations were available. When we requested to be seated outside, the hostess originally said the patio was too busy (there was one table occupied) but then quickly changed her mind and said she should be able to fit us in. We were given a nice table in a prime area overlooking the harbor. (Incidentally, by the time we left 1.5 hours later, only three tables were occupied outside.) The ambiance was very nice with the lovely view and live guitar music and singing in the background. Our waiter, Richard, was extremely polite and professional. We enjoyed our wine and hushpuppies and bread before our entrees arrived. My husband ordered the oysters on the half shell, which he said were some of the largest he'd ever had and were very fresh. He ordered the blackened sea bass, which was their special that night ($36) and I ordered the mahi-mahi ($30). Both of the entrees were served quickly and looked perfectly prepared. I was happy that although quite thick, my fish was still flaky. The fish though was bland other than the areas on top that were covered with a few pieces of bacon and seasoning. The wilted arugula underneath was tasty, but the mango sauce underneath the arugula had very little flavor. My husband had no issues with his fish, which was served rare with a rainbow rice that was quite tasty. We then ordered the tuxedo cake for dessert and it was light and delicious and the best part of the meal. Overall, I walked away thinking it was an OK experience. And even though the food was good, the reason for only three stars is because by the time we made it back to our hotel, I was in extreme abdominal distress. This doesn't happen often, so I know it had to be something I ate from there. It's extremely disappointing when this happens, especially when you've spent over $100 for dinner.

Ella's is tucked back in beautiful Shelter Cove and we chose this restaurant for the location as well as the menu. We had a party of 5 and were sat outside per our request. The decor was beautiful however awful music was playing in the background. The view of the water is absolutely fantastic but you are unable to see the sunset from the outdoor patio. A little bummed but it was still beautiful. As far as the service goes- our waiter was very kind, gave recommendations, even turned the outside heater on for me as it was a bit chilly. He was a goods waiter but our only complaint is he didn't come back very often. We were sitting there waiting for almost 10 minutes with an empty drink or our appetizer plates. In my opinion, you should never be sitting there with an empty glass without being asked if you want something else. Okay, now for the food. I want to start off by saying that my husband and I dine out very frequently and have zero issue paying premium prices for premium food. The waiter recommended the lobster soup for me. I was super excited. It was a little pricey at $11 a bowl so my expectations were a little high. It was a beautiful looking soup and had a great flavor. There is zero sign of lobster in the soup though which is fine. I did taste it a little so I'm assuming it was just super puréed. At least I hope... My husband had the oysters which were pacificos and fine for being $2 oysters which is very responsible. Another couple had the hummus which they enjoyed. I will say that the bread and hush puppies were absolutely fantastic. Kudos for that! For entrees I got based off the servers recommendation the Ugly Burger and my husband got the crab cake. I actually really enjoyed the ugly burger and the truffle fries that came along with it. I mean $18 for a burger is a little steep, let's hope it was grass fed beef. The bigger issue was the crab cakes. We may be bias being that we are from Baltimore where the crab cake is a staple but this was very underwhelming. The portion size was very tiny which would be okay if the price wouldn't have been $32 and made mostly of filler. You can easily find a better crab cake for $18 and it would kick this crab cakes butt. After over a $100 bill, we were left with empty drinks and and an underwhelming meal. But wait, can I take some hush puppies to go?

I went with my parents to celebrate Mother's Day. My Fried Green Tomato appetizer was excellent. However, my knife was replaced after the course. I had to borrow my mother's knife for my Lobster Carbonara, which was chewy and overcooked. At dessert, I asked for a VSOP brandy and was informed that there was no VSOP brandy. There was no grappa, either. I settled for a Frangelico. To their credit, their portion sizes are very good.

Delicious meal, fabulous server, perfect setting. Negatives: The hostess could SMILE and learn to be pleasant, the kitchen took entirely too long with our meal, but the server and live music made up for it all. Will recommend and would return if in the area again.

Had a fantastic evening here. Sat outside with a view of the water and the large yachts docked here. Weather was perfect so it wasn't buggy outside. Started with and SS Refresh a cucumber lime vodka drink which lived up to its name. The bread and hiush puppies at the table with the sweet butter were delicious. Our waiter was super knowledgable and attentive. My kids shared a beef carpaccio that they demolished. I shared fried green tomatoes in a remoulade sauce. I had never had them before but I'm in love after eating these. Entrees ordered were the local caught grouper, tuna and flounder. In additon we also ordered the pork tendeloin special wrapped in prosciutto on a bed of truffled mashed potatoes on a bed of spinach. The pork was a joy to behold and my daughter polished it off with pleasure. The grouper was served on a mashed truffled potatoes and was excellent. I had the flouder with the bearnaise sauce on the side over potato sticks and seasonal greens. The flounder was cooked to pefection and was excellent. The tuna was seared rare and was beautifully prepared as well. Dessert selection was extensive. We ordered two creme brulees, one chocolate mousse and a special gelato made wirh whiskey. Alll were delicious. The combination of ambiance, excellent cuisine with local ingredients and perfect service made this a 5 star evening. I would come back here again without question. Best meal in Hilton Head by far.

BEST PLACE ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND! My husband I absolutely adore this place - we make a trip (or two) to Ela's every time we visit Hilton Head. The cocktails are amazing. The wine list is choiceful and pairs great with their food. The food is out of the world. We particularly love going when we can enjoy our meal while listening to live music by John Wasem - such an amazingly talented performer.

Not as nice as expected. Grouper was nice. Flounder was a bit dry. Ask for more bernaise sauce. Short ribs delicious and fork tender. Rating is low because of unattentive service. We much preferred Alexanders to this place. I would not repeat this restaurant as it was just ok.

My wife and I had dinner at Ela's on the last night of our vacation and we loved it! The venue was ideal at sunset, the food was fantastic and the service was the same. I highly recommend the lobster bisque asit is the best that I have ever had. The next time you are on Hilton head Island make sure that you go to Ela's for dinner or lunch. Went to celebrate Mother's Day. Filet was excellently prepared however my wife's Grouper was under cooked. For the money there are many restaurants on Hilton Head were you can get a better meal for the same or less. Service?? The waiter poured the first glass of wine and we had to pour the rest of the bottle ourselves....I don't think this is the type of service anyone expects for any restaurant other than Mc'Donalds

Very nice. Setting was excellent and service much improved over visit last year. Tuna Tatar shined the brightest. Fresh swordfish cooked nicely and steak done right. Nice. Selection of wine by the glass. Music was geriatric.

We stumbled onto this restaurant in Shelter cove and were lucky to get a table outside. The waiter was pleasant and very informative as to our selections. The pace of the service was great and the spacing between meals was perfect. The calamari were perfect and non -greasy and breading was very light so you could actually taste the calamari. The crab cakes were perfect with lots of crab an very little filler. The lobster tacos were an interested treat and tasty. My husband and I had Red Snapper and our guests had the tuna. Everything was great and the portions were quite large but we all managed to finish which did not leave us room for desert unfortunately. A little pricey but not an issue if food is good. Ambiance and being on the water is a bonus. Would definitely go back.

Disappointing. Walked in and the atmosphere promised a great experience with live piano music and great views. The actual food was the let down with a very limited lunch menu, and a Lobster bisque that had no lobster at all, but with truffle oil which was overpowering.

Had dinner here last night and it was STELLAR! The service was top notch (I'd recommend the server by name but that was actually his last night. He's pursuing his career in Charlotte. Best wishes to him if he's reading this! And GO DAWGS!) Anyway, if you don't order the Pear and Arugula salad then you need to reevaluate your decision making skills. It the best salad I've ever had. For your entree, I recommend the swordfish, the grouper, or the scallops. (Naturally, I sampled each entree on the table.) The scallops are seared perfectly and placed on top of the creamiest, most decadent (crab) risotto I've ever had the pleasure of eating. It's so delicious, you'll close your eyes with each bite; it's involuntary. For dessert, try the Coconut-salted-caramel gelato, the key lime pie, the creme brûlée, or the peanut butter cheese cake. (Listed in order of lightest to most rich.) MOUTH. WATERING.

This place may have been nice at one time, but sadly it has lost its way. First, let's talk about the atmosphere--I sat inside and felt a little like a nursing home. Yes, there is water all around, so perhaps most people are too distracted by the water to notice the dated, dingy, and mismatched decor. My reservation was at 7:30pm, not especially early, but the clientele didn't help with the nursing home feeling I was getting (neither did the "cool jazz" playing in the background). My dining partner had called earlier in the evening to ensure that she could order a piece of grilled fish without sauce or stuffing (this option was also listed on the menu), but our server told us no such option was available. When we told her we had called earlier and were told otherwise, she went back to check with the chef who agreed to pan fry red snapper. Overall, our server was attentive and friendly. The food was just blah--I had the short rib served over white beans. The short rib meat was good but it was drowning in a sauce that had an artificial flavoring note to it. Also the beans tasted like they had just come out of tin can and were cold. My friend's fish was fine--but it was just a piece of pan fried red snapper so not much for the chef to screw up. We decided to try dessert and like all senior centers, they have a tray that they bring around. When asking about where the desserts were made, only one was made in house and three of the desserts were ordered from SYSCO food products. I'm sorry, but if I'm going to pay $40 for an entree and $7 for dessert, you'd better start cooking! But, the industrial SYSCO desserts were simply confirmation of the fact that the chef and/or the owners no longer care about cooking, no longer feel the need to serve high quality food, and are simply relying on the water and wealthy over 60 crowd to make a buck.

My boyfriend and I had a GREAT experience at Ela's. I would consider myself a picky person and I thought both the food and service was top notch. We ordered the lobster nachos- lots of lobster meat and very fresh- and then I had the pear and arugula salad( delicious) and the grouper (seriously amazing) while my boyfriend had the lobster carbonara( decent amount of lobster meat and the pasta was creamy and absolutely delicious). The food came out fast and the servers were very attentive. The view is 5-star and during the summer, there are fireworks on Tuesday nights. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to friends and family.

Terrible service. The waitress seemed to busy to take our orders when we arrived. Then when we ordered she did not know the menu when asked questions. Oh well. Food was dropped and she never checked back. Honestly, the rating would be much higher if our server actually took time to interact with her customers. I watched and all the tables around us were ignored too. The food was fine. Nothing to really review here. Wine is reasonably priced and they have some nice specials. The view is beautiful and the setting nice but the other reviews warning about the steps is accurate.

We ate at Ela's tonight, as it was my dads 65th birthday (they live on HHI part time, & we've come here for years, albeit I havent been to HHI in many years), & Ela's is apparently a restaurant he really likes. I looked at the menu online, & thought ok, some things look interesting, plus I only eat seafood when out at restaurants, so thought it would be great - a win for my dad, & somewhere i'd like to try as well (my boyfriend & mother can eat anywhere). I got him a gift certificate as one of his gifts to pick up there, so he couldn't pay for his portion (to go towards some of my mothers meal as well, ideally, & then my boyfriend & i would split the remainder). Initially, I was pretty taken aback by the ambiance inside, as my mother suggested it was nice (she later retracted this statement), & frankly I think I was more dressed up than anyone has ever been in this establishment. The booths are nice enough, but aside from that, other tables, including ours, are similar to a diner (as a lower review states). Certainly not a great ambiance, & less than i'd anticipated for my fathers birthday. Upon initial review of the menu (they did not bring the wine/drink menus with our food menus, yet when they dropped off the wine menu later, the immediately asked what drinks we wanted...um...you just handed us the cocktail menu, in fact, you didn't even hand it to us, you placed it on the table just now...so clearly we have not gotten a chance to peruse it yet), I was shocked to see that there was not a solitary app or entree that i would want. Much like nola restaurants, everything was a southern fish (except the swordfish)...or a similar variation. We asked about the bass, as my mother suggested i get that, but as it was an SC spotted bass, I very much doubted it would be like a seabass - which, as our waiter informed us, no, it was a redfish. I asked if I could sub the crab risotto the scallops came with with spinach...along with anything else it came with (heavy butter, etc)...no. i asked a series of other questions about the fish they did offer, and was still stumped. ultimately, I said i'd continue to think as the others ate their apps (i asked about just getting a side of mushrooms with the scallops alone - to which he seemed very dubious, so i didn't want to do that..) I ended up ordering the chopped salad sans blue cheese dressing & bacon (so just lettuce, onions & tomatoes), subbing a vinaigrette. The salad comes out with a very thick white dressing on the side...which my boyfriend tastes repeatedly & said its ranch, or something mayo related...so we ask our waiter for the vinaigrette, saying they brought ranch. he then brings out the exact same dressing & just throws it in front of me...whats the point of getting a salad if you're covering it with mayo?? ultimately we learn that this is their 'vinaigrette'...so perhaps he should have just said "our vinaigrette isnt actually vinegar based, or vinegar in any way, but ranch like, & thick," so i'd have been prepared (& not bothered getting it). we'd also gotten a couple bottles of wine, my boyfriend got the caesar, mother got the calamari, & father got the crab cakes. I ended up getting the scallops (which i prefer not to do as they're always tiny...but he insinuated they were large..which was false), with my mushroom side, as i'd initially wanted. while yes, they were tiny, they were also fairly good, so as far as the lacking options went, that was probably the best choice (i tried my fathers fish, which tasted like mush in my opinion, & my mothers fish didn't look much better. my boyfriend also got the scallops, sans any subs, but ate most of my mushrooms as well, so clearly he was stuffed from his massive scallops). This entire time our waiter hadn't been great - & while i'm sure i wasn't his favorite customer given i disliked everything on the menu, lets be serious, he's not standing at our table waiting for me to pick something (as i told him i would just order when they brought the apps), so his lacking service throughout the meal was quite infuriating (we actually flagged down other waiters & the manager to assist us at points, & had to ask him for more water when he did come by & fail to notice they were empty). Now what bothered me the most, was that at the end, my boyfriend & I still tipped him 20% (on the meal before the gift certificate was applied, obviously)...he came to take away our signed copies before we left...& didn't even acknowledge us as we all left. As in he literally turned his back to us as we walked by-after his overall crappy service. I always tip 20% (unless i literally want to throw something at the waiter), unless the service is great, in which case I tip more...so while it wasn't as though we were pleased with his service, having worked in restaurants, i know how badly many people tip. It was $300ish before tip (neither $$$$ nor $), but lacking service & menu ensure I wont be back (parents are no longer fans either).

This restaurant was wonderful -- from décor to service to the fabulous food! What a lovely evening we spent at Ela's Blu Water Grille. A great addition to the Hilton Head restaurant scene.

My mom and I went on a recommendation from a friend while we were on vacation and we had a good time but weren't overly impressed. I made a reservation really far in advance but they gave us a pretty bad table (upstairs in the back, looking out at a condo building basically) - but we should have asked for a different one so that was our fault. We split a couple apps including the fried green tomatoes, which were actually just regular red tomatoes. I got the grouper and thought it was pretty good but my mom wasn't a huge fan of hers (forget what it was). I think this is the kind of place where the atmosphere make all the difference - so had we been outside on a nice night, I think we would have enjoyed it more.

Ela's joins Michael Mina in San Fran, Stella's in New Orleans, Charleston Restaurant in Baltimore and other elite restaurants as among my very favorites anywhere. Located in an otherwise unremarkable office building at the back of the Shelter Cove community of Hilton Head, Ela's is not a place you'd happen upon while driving by. But the search for it is worth it. The waterside setting on quiet Shelter Cove is tranquil, scenic and lovely. The decor of the restaurant is understated, comfortable and sophisticated. The arrangement of tables, both outdoor seating and on several levels indoor, allows quiet and intimacy without feeling walled off or isolated. Despite what I'm sure was a very busy evening for Elas over the Labor Day weekend, my date and I were greeted cheerfully by the hostess when we arrived for our reservation, and were immediately shown to our table. Our waitress was friendly, professional and knowledgeable about the menu and wines offered. I was very impressed with the extensive wine selection, and even more pleased that Ela's is (according to them) the sole South Carolina distributor for several very nice upscale Napa wines not on their regular wine menu including a personal favorite, Darioush Chardonnay. The pricing of all the wines was very fair, both by the glass and by the bottle. The dinner menu featured fish and shellfish selections, along with a smaller number of beef, pork and pasta choices. My gf's triggerfish was terrific, fresh and flavorful. I also had a delicious flakey white fish entree, but was blown away by the amazing mushroom risotto side dish. We split a decadent German chocolate cake dessert, or tried to, settling for a bite or two each-it was so rich and delicious, we feared the extra half hour at the gym if we did finish it. The following weekend I spent over $400 for a lesser meal at a restaurant in NYC, but this amazing dinner at Ela's totaled only $160 for two, including appetizers, entrees, two glasses of wine each and with gratuity! It may not be the right place for a large family with noisy young kids, but on an island of very good restaurants, for a romantic dinner or for sophisticated dining for a group of adults, Elas stands out as an exceptional experience. It will be a Must Go for me whenever I go again to Hilton Head Island.

I was looking for a restaurant that did not have a children's menu, somewhere quiet with a view. This was it! Nice setting, pretty view & good quality food. Ela's had ample portions & since this was our (on vacation) Thanksgiving day dinner that was important. The price was about $30 per person, which I considered a deal. The regular menu was also between $20-$30, which is average for the most part in H.H. I really liked my entree (traditional T-Day) & my boyfriend was extremely happy with his as well (Tur-Duck-en) but his mom was not thrilled with her scallops & risotto. Our server was great, a guy from Panama with an awesome personality & a lot of attention to detail. He checked in with us even though he was very busy. Overall I was very happy to have picked Ela's from all the rest. It is very hidden, but the view was worth the drive to find it. PS I'm not sure if Ela's always has live music, but the pianist on Thanksgiving 2012 was amazing!

Atmosphere is fantastic. Wait staff is superb. Presentation of the food is great. Problem is the food taste just so so. We brought our own wine for my wife's birthday (no corkage which is great) and it still cost me $157 for a meal that was over salted and kinda bland. I really really wanted to like it - but the food taste like Lean Cuisine. Oh well. Everything else is great about it

We were staying right next door to this place and had heard some good reviews so decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed! My fiancé and I got in around 8pm with no problem or wait at all. We had a wonderful, friendly server who was prompt but not rushed. We ordered the calamari appetizer ...BEST I've ever had! Not rubbery at all and just lightly breaded. I would make a meal of that and a side salad any day! I ordered the crab cake entree which was delicious. You get two cakes, full of crab meat rather than a bunch of filler like some other places. My fiancé got the grouper which was equally delish. It was more on the pricey side for us but we felt we got what we paid for. ***ONE thing I will say*** If you have any sort of injury, arthritis, or any orthopedic impairment, be aware there are a lot of stairs in this place. There is an elevator that will get you to the front door but seating options may be limited so it might be a good idea to call ahead or make a reservation for first level seating.

Came here on a recomendation from the concierge at our resort for a date night while vaca w/ the family; just me the Mrs. They seated us in what I would consider the best in the house, a nice cozy curved booth perched up a step above the 2nd floor tables which provided for the perfect vista for a romantic dinner. Went for the swordfish and was not disappointed to say the least; it was like fish butter....yum!! My wife had the crab cakes & just absolutely loved them, which says a lot for a Maryland girl! Trust me....eat here if you don't mind splurging a bit for a fab meall......

We saw this restaurant lit up from the water on our way back to the dock after a sunset dolphin cruise and thought we would try it before leaving Hilton Head Island! We were NOT disappointed at all! Checked it out on here and liked what we read, so made reservations via Open Table through Yelp! Made it VERY easy to get reservations and we were able to specify we wanted outdoor seating. Arrived at Ela's and were immediately taken to our table, a quite little table for two on the stair landing overlooking the marina! The only negative thing I really have to say about our experience was the table, because there were actually two tables for two on this landing and it would have been MUCH more comfortable and private if it was only 1 table! Was a little cramped legwise once the adjacent table was seated, but it was still a GREAT evening. We ordered the crab cake appetizer, which was one crab cake - thank goodness it was just me and the hubby, it was delicious though. I ordered the 8oz filet mignon topped with mushrooms and a light brown gravy, which came with augratin mashed potatoes and veggies. My hubby got the 14 oz New York strip, served on heirloom tomatoes with pesto and topped with grilled onions and blue cheese bits. Our steaks were cooked to perfection, my filet melted in your mouth and hubby's steak was awesome! We finished our meal off with handmade cheesecake for me and chocolate bunt cake for him (think molten lava cake) as well as a cup of coffee - which was good as well! All together the atmosphere, food and service were excellent. It is a bit pricey, but we decided to celebrate our 29th wedding anniversary early with this evening and it was well worth it! Would definitely return here on a return visit to HHI, SC!!!

Had lunch there today. It wasn't crowded at all but they seated us next to the only other table of outside diners. The waitress took our appetizer and drink order promptly but I had to go inside 15 minutes later (no apps) to ask to have our meal order taken. 30 minutes after that, the waitress came back to apologize - she had forgotten to enter our order. When the food came, the bisque and remoulade sauce both had "skin" on top so they must have been sitting for awhile. Food might have been good but we were done by that time. Would hate to see it if there were more than a few customers.

After a very negative experience at the opposite end of the harbor, Ela's was a godsend. The HHI gator bite was the best frozen drink that we have ever had. The service and atmosphere are excellent. We enjoyed the She crab soup, NY strip (cooked perfectly med- rare), and the Ugly burger. If you are looking for a great meal in Shelter Cove, Ela's is the place.

Had dinner with the family at Ela's yesterday. I had read all the reviews and was eagerly looking forward to dinner. I must be the only person in the island to disagree. The food was just ok but blatantly overpriced. The view of the harbor is pretty but you need to get a table by the water - otherwise you may as well be at the Hilton Head diner. Good luck.

Outstanding setting, great service, excellent food. The red snapper meunière was very good as was the grouper. Avoid the sweet orange sauce which overwhelms the fish.

ELAs has become one of our 'Go To' restaurants in Hilton Head for excellent food and service. ELAs has hit a good stride with their menu, providing great offerings start to finish. We have yet to have a bad or even mediocre meal here over repeated visits the last 3 years. Favorites: tuna tar tar is fantastic. Swordfish entree is always perfect (though I do wish the version with the pork belly pairing returns to the menu soon!). Desert: sea salt caramel gelato is our favorite, but they served a pumpkin bread pudding with ice cream last night that was out of this world. Great views of the marina, live music, terrific staff, and a chef that creates some of the best food we've had on the island. ELAs food ranks right up there with Sage Room, Old Fort, but is often less expensive. I hope ELAs maintains this level as word of mouth will continue to make them a popular choice among locals and visitors.

Wonderful food with great view of the marina. I have been several times. Shrimp cocktail is excellent starter. The ribeye and grouper are my favorite entrees. Don't go if your in a rush.

One of the best filets I've ever had. Seating was nice with views of the marina. Service was fine. Only issue our table had was confusion over one of the steak orders and it is ot being cooked with the peppercorn. It was sent back and they fixed it, but the steak was then well over cooked. They made a new steak, but it was so rare that the center was actually still fridge temperature. In the end, that person just didn't eat.

poor table upstairs away from the main restaurant, no atmosphere, average food at high prices, over cooked steak, average service, levied an automatic service charge, not somewhere that I would go again

We were going to go to the restaurants further up the harbor but didn't want to walk as it was cold so we to Ela's. The atmosphere and view was nice. We got the calamari as an app - it was different but fairly good - thick straight pieces. 2 interesting sauces came with it. We also got the wedge salad - it was pretty good. The waiter recommend ed the special - a ribeye. It was terrible - bad cut with tons of fat. We sent it back and the host and waiter said the chef looked at it and agreed it was a bad cut. We then got the short rib sandwich and it was as good as the steak was bad. The bread used in the sandwich was amazing and it had a mustard sauce (I typically don't like mustard) that was super good. The service was good and the waiter was nice. I would probably go back and give it another chance.

We stumbled upon this place while lookin for another restaurant. We were so hungry and tired of driving that we decided to stay. This was THE best mistake I've ever made. The service was excellent. All staff were attentive and pleasant, from the hostess to our waiter to the runners. The manager even came out and checked on us a few times. As I mentioned, we were HUNGRY and before we ordered the waiter brought us a basket of the BEST hush puppies you or I have ever tasted. We dubbed them "hush puppies from heaven" and called him "angel" all night. The calamari was perfect. I mean P-E-R-fect; The pieces were huge with a thin crispy crust and deliciously tender inside. All 6 of us agreed that we have been ruined for calamari forever. The waiter downplayed the crab cakes, saying that there was a lot of breading, but I beg to differ. It had a lot of huge chunks of fresh crab and was perfectly seasoned with just enough breading. Wedge salad: on point. Fried green tomatoes: perfectly crisp and thick crust with huge juicy tomato inside. The only drawback was the lobster bisque tasted like tomato bisque (which was also on the menu and no, we didn't get them mixed up)-very little lobster. And last but not least: All of this took place on their beautiful, starlit waterfront balcony and the prices were MORE than reasonable.

A very decent restaurant, but, really folks, nothing to get excited about and certainly not deserving five stars!! Nice setting, very good quality food, ample portions, slightly overpriced, interested but semi-professional (not knowledgeable about the details of the menu, though admitted he worked here for six months) service summarizes this restaurant. Management seated us, and though restaurant was empty, and I had a reservation, requesting a large table, they first offered us a small table which I rejected. They then offered us a booth, which was fine. The restaurant was essentially empty the rest of the night, so what were they saving the "best" tables in the house for, if not for a reserved party???? Management was present the whole night, yet only came over one time to clear glasses before we ordered dessert. Outdoor mats were left hanging over the railing when we were seated, and I had to ask a busboy to remove, so we wouldn't see it all night, obstructing our view of the harbor. Considering management has been in the hospitality business elsewhere, I'd think that they'd pay a little more attention to the details of running a restaurant with the prices they charge.

Wonderful, new restaurant near Palmetto Dunes on Hilton Head Island. We really enjoyed the atmosphere. Definitely one of the best experiences in terms of atmosphere we've had on our entire 5-day stay. The prices were much higher than I had anticipated and would be probably steered me way if I'd realized. The food was well prepared and very satisfactory, but I didn't personally think the price ranges were on point with the dishes. All in all, a great place to dine if you can spend the money.

Stayed on Hilton Head for a week and this was by far the best place we ate at on the island. Ask for a table outside! The atmosphere was amazing with the sun going down and a few boats coming in to pack it in for the night. Beautiful scenery was only one of the few pluses of this place. The service and food were perfect. The lobster nachos were awesome and had probably some of the best presentation I've seen. There's a large wine list that REALLY did have the best prices. A bottle of Jordan for $75 and Caymus Special Select for $125...you won't see that at any other restaurant. The entrees were great (Filet for one and Grouper for the other). Save room for dessert, too! Afterwards, you can walk off your meal around the marina and listen to several live acoustic shows.

I gave Ela's an average score because this restaurant did have some positive aspects. My husband and I were celebrating his 41 birthday and wanted to try a restaurant and an experience we have never had. Dining out for us is always about the experience and the food. If our dining experience would have stopped after the appetizers I would have left a happy diner and ready to bring my family back for my fathers birthday in January. Our appetizers were amazing!!! The Tuna Tar Tar was so tasty and was plated beautifully. There was enough for us to share. We also had the Crab Cake Appetizer. I HATE crab and this was very delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed it though the size was a little on the small side. I would suggest this app for one. We also had the Beef Carpaccio Appetizer. Another great option. The bathrooms were clean, the restaurant was beautiful and the view was amazing. Ron our server was very kind, attentive and warm. Here comes the disappointing part: I ordered my $36 Filet Medium Rare as I always do. I work in restaurants so I could tell right off the bat that my filet was cooked to a high Mid-Well closer to well done. My husband ordered the Grouper and unfortunately his food would have gotten cold if he would have held off eating. We sent my Filet back and by the time it came back out (10 mins later for a MR FILET!) he was already finished eating. The worst part is??!!! The manager was doing work all around the restaurant and NEVER even popped over to apologize for the mix up( huge difference between MR and almost WELL DONE) or even stopped to check on our food. POOR MANAGEMENT. I expected to see him. Ron our server handled it well and his service was very attentive but when my husband and I spend $80 on the entrees alone and we CAN't EVEN EAT TOGETHER...I expect to see the manager not just the server. So for his birthday we were left eating alone. Our bill was $159 and we only got to eat the Appetizers together. Very lame, uncoordinated and lack of management. At least I can say my husband and I got to eat together at PANARA BREAD today..... Won't be coming back. Sad thing is...right after the apps I had just gotten done telling my husband that I was already planning our next visit here. MANAGEMENT I hope you take note to this....a simple table visit from the manager could have solved this. I DON't feel like a VALUED GUEST. I gave service a terrible because of management not because or Ron

Our family reunion decided to try something new this year and we were all glad that we chose Ela's! The food was great, especially the appetizers, (calamari some of the best we've ever had and the lobster bisque was Delicious). The view from anywhere in the restaurant is spectacular and we took a look at their second and third floor rooms for possible use for private parties and everyone thought they were beautiful. The new interior design is very classy and we loved that there is room between tables - you do not feel like you're on top of the next table like many HH restaurants. The wait staff was informative, efficient and fun. But perhaps the best was the great bartender who not only made wonderful drinks and fulfilled special requests, but also provided much information about the island that we didn't know about - even after coming to HH for over 30 years.

I wanted to take my girlfriend's parents out somewhere nice while I was vacationing with her entire family in Hilton Head. I will never forget that night at ela's for three very distinct reasons - first, the seared scallops were some of the best I have ever tasted; second, my gf's mother made a near-inappropriate comparison of the cheesecake to intercourse (causing all of the adjacent tables to join her husband & i in a roar of laughter) & lastly, because it was there that I asked for permission to marry their daughter. I will never forget that night because we all left the restaurant with full stomachs & full hearts!

Have been on a vacation down the East Coast for the last couple of weeks and I just finished with a stop in Hilton Head. My last night of dinner was at Ela's Grille, and was the best dinner of the trip. Steak was cooked perfectly. It was tender and juicy. I finished my meal and headed to the bar for a couple of drinks. I was pleasantly surprised by an equally tender and juicy bartender. I believe his name was Alex and he was friendly and extraordinarily helpful. Had the cunning wit of an old sailor with a hint of boyish charm. I whole heartedly recommend this place for all!

We were directed here by the bellhop at our resort. To say this place is pretentious would be an understatement. 10 minutes to wait for a glass of wine and a waiter whose description of the wine list defied belief. Told our bread would be out in 10 minutes but no attempt to take an appetizer order. I requested the check. I can't honestly comment on the food, the atmosphere and strange service drove us off.

    (1)
  • Doug S.

Food was ok, but not for the price. The view is also just ok but is aided by mirrors which further adds to the illusion of this place. To top it all off, the waiter did the old switcharoo trick on the wine charging us $14 each for a glass of wine that was clearly on the menu for $9. They eventually changed the bill but we had to push it a bit and show the menu. Many other upscale placesin HH that are better.

What a view!! This restaurant overlooks the Marina at Shelter Cove and the three levels of tables offers great views. We arrived for a late moon light dinner and was pleasantly surprised to be seated right at a window offer the rising moon over the island. No reservation needed!! It was a Monday night and the crowd was enjoying Shelter Cove activities for the kids as we enjoyed a great meal. I ordered the blacken oyster appetizer and found them to be delicious. My main course was the swordfish and my wife had the grouper, both came with side entrees of vegetables cooked to perfection. The presentation was a work of art (similar to the art work throughout the restaurant) and was complimented by a great wait staff. The cozy, intimate atmosphere topped off a wonderful evening and we will return on our next island visit.

Had heard that Ela's Blue Water Grille was relatively new and offered great food and views. Stopped in and found the views fantastic; right into Shelter Cove Harbor and the majestic marshes. The service was spotty but sufficient. Surprising because we were among the first to arrive for dinner. We had fish dishes, one a Carolina Flounder and the other an Atlantic Grouper. The chef takes pride in finding and utilizing products and foods from the local area and waters. The entrees seeemed to take an extended period to arrive. The restaurants calamari appetizer helped to fill the time void. The calamari is a bit different, but tasty. It is also filling. After the entrees finally arrived, the presentations were well worthy of the hype. The taste was "good", however nothing to get excited about. If you have not been there, it is certainly worth a try, particularly if you have extra time to linger and enjoy the view.

Used to be the Ocean Grille until early this year and we enjoyed both the food under the old owners and after dinner walk. The food is still great. Fried green tomato appetizer was really good. Plus live entertainment on a Thursday evening off season -- James Taylor, Jim Croce and he even sounded like Gordon Lightfoot doing GL.

Had made a reservation before we left home for our vacation. Last night dinner before returning home. I had hoped for something really special. Food was good not outstanding. Same for the service. I had the flounder special and my husband had the ribeye, which was not the kind of ribeye we are used to in Colorado. Neither were special. Would go back but not as a special evening. Nice view of the cove.

We had reservations for 2 people at 7 pm. We were shown to a table directly under a vent blowing cold air (on a very cold weather day). The waiter tried with no success to close the vent. He suggested changing our table. There was an empty table next to ours, but said there was a reservation for 2 at that table and nothing else was available.... We left. I don't thing we will try again.

This restaurant just opened in June and we have eaten there twice and had great meals both times. The first visit was for apps only--fried green tomatoes (very good), calamari (some of the best ever), french onion soup (very tasty, not overly salty as is often the case, the cheese perfect) and sliders (w/ onions and peppers, very good). The second visit was for full meals--a grouper with blood orange special that was among the best seafood dishes we've had in a number of years and 2 more apps serving as an entree--the crab and boursin dip (exceptional) and an ahi tuna appetizer (no other way to describe but excellent!). Plus, a great water view as a bonus. We will return. Highly recommended.
